Ten years into his small-town romance with Abby (Brea Grant), bartender Hank (Jeremy Gardner) wakes up alone in an empty home with nothing but a cryptic parting note for company. As Hank drinks himself into heartbreak and depression, Abby's sudden departure soon becomes the least of his concerns as a mysterious monster starts clawing at his door on a nightly basis. As the threat outside his door intensifies, Hank calls on Abby's police officer brother Shane (Justin Benson) and best friend Wade (Henry Zebrowski) for help, but with no trace of the monster – and his behaviour becoming more erratic – his friends remain unconvinced of the creature lurking outside and Hank slips further into his own paranoia and loneliness. angol An inconspicuous-looking little film, which is in fact a well-written, brilliantly acted gem directed by a firm hand. In it, one of the directors plays the main role of a man who tries to cope with the recent disappearance of his partner in an empty house and also with an unknown monster, scratching at the door every night, which may be real or may be the embodiment of his sadness and fear. The regular alternation of two narrative positions, based on the alternation of days and nights, combines a romantic drama with a strong horror element, which serves as a metaphor for anxiety about the potential end of a relationship, and builds on the motif of uncertainty and real-life situations. The beginning is very slow, but then the consistently graduating story develops its qualities more and more and enthralls with long dialogue sequences and a famous, emotionally strong conclusion. ()

angol The names Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are among the names of the producers of this indie film, and this indicates that it will not be a clear-cut and straightforward horror movie that is easy to get your head around, no, not at all. After Midnight is, in practice, a bit of a conversational movie about a romance, dressed up in horror themes to spice it up. Within the context of the story, however, this ultimately becomes more of a metaphorical device, and so does not hold much appeal as a horror movie in itself for sure. This is why this movie should be more popular with lovers of romantic dramas with a unique twist than, for example, the average horror aficionado. [Sitges 2019] ()
