1982-ben André Bamberski értesül róla, hogy 14 éves lánya, Kalinka meghalt, az édesanyjával és annak új férjével közös németországi nyaralás során. Bamberski meg van róla győződve, hogy a halála nem baleset volt, és nyomozásba kezd. A boncolási jegyzőkönyv arra enged következtetni, hogy a kislányt a mostohaapa, Dr. Dieter Krombach ölte meg. Miután Németországban nem tudja elérni, hogy Krombach-ot elítéljék, Bamberski a francia hatóságokban bízva annak szenteli az életét, hogy igazságot szolgáltasson Kalinkának és börtönbe juttassa Krombachot. Even though the story is based on a true event, it's a powerful narrative, and the creators managed to convey the strength of this story into the film. Sure, I like it because it's essentially a revenge movie, even though everything remains within the bounds of not fundamentally overstepping justice on the part of the avenger. But sometimes it pays to go after justice, even though it can take almost 30 years.
