Thien has to take the remains of his dead sister-in-law to the family village, accompanied by his five-year-old nephew. In the hinterland of Vietnam, spectres of his own youth, of his brother, who has left to rebuild his life elsewhere, and of the war also await him. This is a pilgrimage with mystical overtones, to rural parts of the country and its little-known Christian minority. The film interrogates the persistence of faith, not only in God but in the delicate beauty of earthly existence. (Cannes Film Festival)

Rendkívül lassú és a közönség számára egyáltalán nem izgalmas, egy fiatalember "spirituális útja" az élet értelmének megértéséről, amelyet egyik napról a másikra hirtelen megváltoztatta lánytestvére tragikus halála. Hosszú beállítások, beszélgetés az emberekkel, a vietnami vidék hétköznapi háttere. Semmi fokozás, semmi cselekményfejlődés, ahogy azt a filmekben megszoktuk. Három kimerítő órában. El sem tudok képzelni olyan lelkiállapotot, amiben ez a film jobban "érthető" lenne számomra.

An excellent slow cinema debut that suffers from the fact that, unlike the works of real masters, it contemplates less with images and more with words…but Thien An is a talent who can add interesting postscripts to Tsai Ming-Liang’s legacy in the future. However, he still falls a bit short of the poetic mastery of his Chinese colleague Bi Gan’s Kaili Blues.
