Háborgó mélység (1999)
The most watchable and best shark movie since Jaws.
Dead Birds (2004)
After the enthusiastic responses by horror fans, the expectations were high and therefore the big disappointment. The monster looks fine, if it was given more space I would have liked the film better. The jump-scares were nothing extraordinary, I was a bit startled a couple of times and that’s it. And the twist… it was weird. It’s true that Dead Birds is similar to Asian ghost stories, which for me is never a plus.
Jelek (2002)
An above-average thriller (a variation of Independence Day) in the typical chatty style of Shyalaman that generates an unsettling atmosphere from the beginning to the end, where things fall considerably apart due to the not very good look of the aliens. Mel Gibson carries the film on his shoulders, he hardly ever leaves the screen. Signs doesn’t get a full score mostly because of the ending, which is way too American and doesn’t fit the film’s atmosphere.
Driftwood (2006)
Terribly boring with an awfully predictable story, you will figure out how it ends already ten minutes into the film. That funny-looking light red blood is something I haven’t seen in a long time in film. I don’t see a single reason to recommend this to anyone.
Vérvadászok (2006)
A pretty well executed horror drama about a not entirely normal family. It’s a pity that they never try to build an atmosphere, because the first scene hints at how it could have worked. For an undemanding audience, however, it should be enough. It’s not getting a higher rating due to the lack of a tense, unexpected or otherwise more interesting ending. 50%
Bogárűző (2006)
A pretty interesting psycho-thriller (though the first half is more a dramatic probe into the lower layers of American society). The name made me expect something very different. Even though the story takes place basically in one room, the film holds the tension without problem and the two sicko protagonists are very good. PS: The conspiracy subplot would be good in The X-Files.
Gyerekjáték (1988)
Who doesn’t know Chucky? Horror movie of the year.
Tökéletes gyilkosság (1998)
A great example of an intricate thriller where the villain uses a lot of lies and manipulation, only to gradually get mixed up in them himself. I love this style. And with Michael Douglas in top form, too. 85%
Hármas (2005)
I expected quite some bullshit, but it ended up being good fun. The middle part, in particular, was beautifully insane. It’s a pity the ending, that voodoo shaman ruined it. 60%
Boogeyman 2 (2007)
Before anything, I must say that I didn’t watch the first part, but I heard a lot of negative comments about it, so I didn’t expect anything from this sequel. I was very surprised by the good atmosphere, the decent performances and the originality of some of the deaths. What disappointed me, on the other hand, was the twist, it was truly unexpected considering the events up to that point, but it wasn’t very fitting. Yeah, and it’s funny that Jigsaw Bell scared me more than the Boogeyman :) If I compare it with other films that I had the misfortune of watching recently, this one is well above-par. PS: Could someone who saw the first one please tell me if this sequel has anything in common with it, other than the name? Based on what I’ve read, it seems it doesn’t :)
