Danis Tanović (b. 1969, Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina) studied intermedia directing at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Sarajevo, where he spent the first two war years as the head of the documentary film archive. His journalistic reports earned international fame. In 1995–1997, he studied directing in Brussels, where he shot several documentary films. He had a highly successful debut with the tragicomedy No Man’s Land (2000), which earned him an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, the European Film Award, a Best Screenplay Award at Cannes, and a César Award for Best Debut. He followed up with a segment in the anthology film 11´09´´01 (2002), Hell (L’enfer, 2004) – a drama based on a script by Krzysztof Kieślowski – Triage (2009) and Circus Columbia (2010).
