Acclaimed filmmaker Johnny To directs Lucky Encounter, an early-nineties action comedy which mixes slapstick with an unusually dark storyline. Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Kent Cheng are King and Fatty, a couple of nice guy thieves hired by a drooling maniac named Cheap Chan (Anthony Wong in another deranged performance) to steal a stuffed Garfield doll from a mansion. What the two guys discover is Siu Bo (Siu Pak Lam), a child ghost who became so after he was killed and stuffed into a trunk by Cheap Chan! King and Fatty resolve to help Siu Bo gain vengeance, and with the help of Siu Bo's relatives Kingdom Yuen and the pretty Sang Ni, the two start to do just that. But unbeknownst to them, Siu Bo is slowly sucking their life force away. Can they help Siu Bo find peace and reincarnate before they're dead themselves? Wacky hijinks, random romance, and over-the-top performances combine with darker-than-usual thematic material to make Lucky Encounter an entertaining, slightly different Hong Kong comedy.
