One is sometimes amazed what "gem" can become a start of a huge franchize (to this day, the Puppet Master has twelve sequels). This first installment, with its simplicity and schlock, has very little to offer to the audience, perhaps just setting-up a sketching out of the Puppet Master mythology, which in this movie does not have any significant purpose at all. Puppet Master is very slowly paced, has incompetent directing, and there is only a scant amount of terror generated from the puppets. I have to admit that I expected something a little different from this "cult" movie. [Sitges 2019]
