Le Pays

Chady and David work on cargo ships on Lake Geneva. They are both foreigners in Switzerland. On the oscillating waters of the lake, the young men, who are haunted by the memories of their home countries, share secrets, memories and the same feeling of being uprooted. A strange intimacy forms between the two men. They then dare to undertake an erratic wandering, through a space and time that perhaps exist only in their dreams, but that resemble, at times, Switzerland. What is a country? It matters little if what we evoke is the country of our ancestors or that to which we have emigrated: a country is always a hallucination. Lucien Monot accompanies his characters throughout this crossing, on the edge of the real and the imaginary, offering an extremely delicate and poetic film on expatriation. A reflection on friendship, belonging and the notion of foreignness, which is not necessarily determined by our place of birth, since once we have left the country, we are always foreigners, everywhere.
