Andrew Braddock (Michael York) hajótörés áldozataként hányódik a tengeren. Amikor a gyötrelmes napok után végre szárazföldet pillant meg, fel sem merül benne, hogy ami a parton várja, talán rosszabb a biztos halálnál. A sziget ura, Dr. Moreau (Burt Lancaster) ördögi kísérleteket folytat a világ e rejtett zugában, távol a kíváncsi tekintetektől. Bár Braddockot barátságosan fogadják, a vadonban soha nem látott lényekre figyel fel. Ők a sziget őrült urának szerencsétlen teremtményei, félig emberi, félig állati lények, akik bár értelmesek, mégis vadak és kiszámíthatatlanok. Braddock érzi, hogy nincs biztonságban.
