Gales Point: a village on the edge. In this small black community on the coast of Belize, surrounded by water and rainforest, many aspects of life remained unchanged for decades. Until the day 60 kilos of cocaine, part of a larger shipment on the way from Columbia to the United States, washed up on the shores of this small village. Now life has changed. Fishing and farming, the traditional means of livelihood here, have been pushed aside by drug dealing, crime and robbery. The people once gathered outside, drumming into the night; today they stay behind closed doors. Drug addiction has claimed many. The five main subjects of this ethnographic portrait paint a vivid picture of life in Gales Point. Can moral judgements be made about the drummer, the dealer, the crack addict or the ex-addict? The aim of the film is not to answer this question, but to offer an unadulterated look at the reality of their lives. In doing so, the film reveals a picture of Creole culture, a place between right and wrong, between survival and exploitation, local yet globally relevant in an age of drugs and money.
