This realistically shot adventure, loosely inspired by Verne's The Begum's Fortune, tells the story of a megalomaniac arms-factory owner planning to destroy his peaceable neighbours. The filmmakers varied the original plot with new motifs and made its anti-war message more up-to-date. (Summer Film School)

A high-quality adaptation of Verne's sensitive interpretation of 19th-century society (as you can see, it is also great for 20th-century events). Ráža's film has especially excellent actors and a very good artistic aspect, which gives it a very suggestive touch. Some of the shots are very depressing and literally exude the steely cold of Janus's city...

A completely different take on Verne's work than we are used to from Karel Zeman's films, but still - or maybe because of it - this is a very good, believable-looking film with an eternal, ageless message, an excellent cast and impressive music by Fischer. Jaromír Hanzlík, Martin Růžek and Josef Vinklář were great. I was also looking forward to seeing my favorite actor Josef Větrovec, but he only appeared at the beginning and at the end.... And he didn't even say a word (that voice!).
