Amikor Agatha Christie megálmodta a belga nyomozó alakját, alacsony termetű, köpcös, díszes bajuszú, talpig elegáns úriembert képzelt el, aki valamikor az 1880-as években született. Az írónő által életre keltett nyomozó évtizedeken keresztül derítette fel a rejtélyes ügyeket, saját magát pedig minden szerénytelenséget nélkülözve remek embernek tartotta. Christie egészen az 1920-as évektől írt Poirot könyveket, mígnem 1975-ben, a Függöny című regényben vetett véget a detektív életének, aki a leírtak szerint 96 évesen, szívbetegség következtében hunyt el. A filmvásznon több színésznek is lehetősége volt belebújni Poirot bőrébe, leginkább mégis David Suchet alakítása emlékezetes. Suchet a '90-es évek elején vette át a nyomozó szerepét, filmes alakításai mellett pedig elsősorban Shakespeare színészként ismert. (Galaxy4)
