Mr. Van Aldin az amerikai milliomosokról élő ellenszenves kép igazi megtestesítője. A lánya sem éppen szent. Az elkényeztetett Ruth éppen válófélben van, szeretője pedig egy hamiskártyás gróf. Ráadásul a fiatal nő felelőtlenül magával viszi a világ egyik legértékesebb drágakövét, amikor a fényűző Kék Vonatra száll. A franciaországi luxusutazás során nem csak a rubint rabolják el, de Ruthot is megölik, méghozzá nem mindennapi kegyetlenséggel. A nyomozás során kiderül, hogy a vonat előkelő utasai közül szinte senki nem az, akinek látszik. Csakis Poirot képes kibogozni a kusza szálakat és fényt deríteni rá, ki a háborodott elme, aki képes volt erre a szomorú, értelmetlen és brutális bűncselekményre. (Fantasy Film)

Although Agatha considered "The Mystery of the Blue Train" (1928) to be her weakest novel, she was apparently the only one who thought so. She had only begun developing herself professionally, in this case developing the short story "The Plymouth Express" (1923). In the TV version with Suchet's Poirot, it's a delight and a treat. The damsel in distress is played by the sexy Jaime Murray, and all the characters around her also have the proper spark. Especially the successful family, where you are not sure who is the mother and who is the daughter. Poirot himself flutters around the sweet little lady and gives out smiles on cue. It's a scandal.

This episode simply didn't sit well with me. It's also in how much focus there is on the details of the faces. It just bothered me quite a bit, as well as the whole story, which for me only became interesting essentially at the very end, when Poirot invited everyone to his place again. Here it has its proper twists.
