The Secret of Magic Island is an extremely bizarre project, behind whose creation is hidden the rather incomprehensible ambition to make a fairy tale for children in which all of the characters are played by real animals. On the other hand, it is necessary to acknowledge that the filmmakers flawlessly fulfilled their stated intention. However, that doesn’t mean that the film actually works. In fact, the opposite is true. Instead of focusing on the narrative, the viewer is constantly amazed by how the filmmakers executed specific scenes and shots with animals, or rather how much patience (and/or luck) was required to shoot one particular shot with several animals of different species standing side by side.
