Sofia Coppola already shows with her first short film that she has a sense for strong female protagonists, which will continue to be repeated in her subsequent work. Similarly, she also has a sense for a certain stylization, which is primarily given here by the use of a black and white scheme. Otherwise, this is an example of how required reading can actually be dangerous. An interesting idea with a clever result.
