angol I really wanted to like the Watchmaker's Apprentice, if only for its great cast. My wish didn’t exactly come true. The fairy tale was quite watchable, but there were too many things that didn’t make sense. For instance, I found it really hard to believe that a boy and a girl who had been growing up together for ten years wouldn’t talk about their mutual affection until their engagement. Not even children for whom the fairy tale was intended would be fooled by that these days. Children have access to the Internet and obviously know much more than the writer/director thinks. I absolutely didn’t like Michal Balcar as Urban, on the other hand, Jana Plodková scored a lot of points with me. It's a shame that the creators didn't put more effort into the story, the potential was there. ()

angol I really liked the period setting of this fairytale; the costumes, the masks and locations were excellent. But what I found disappointing was the extremely dragged out story. The plot was very weak and you could tell that it was over-long. The human characters seemed very shallow and lacked any development. This movie is of average quality, much helped by the visuals and the acting performances of the "witches". ()

angol Being one year older, The Magic Quill is an even better film, but this film is also an exceptionally good new fairy tale. Perfectly cast and acted, surprising, crazy fun (Miroslav Krobot, I need not say more) and thrilling, with a beautiful stage sets (I always appreciate when the creators decide to get rid of the usual “alternative Middle Ages" and use a different time period, this time the end of the 19th century) and, thanks to Jitka Rudolfová, it is filled with impressive scenes of all kinds.
