Filmed on a Danish biodynamic farm, Songs from the Soil is a state of mind, a forty-minute prayer, a song of praise for nature and life. Built on the meditative music by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, the imagery equally caresses a new-born calf, raindrops on a cobweb, playing kittens and a cow heap teeming with dung flies. Information isn’t shared, spoken or written out. Nature and its cycle glide before our eyes as the music soothes our ears. We visit the meadow and the cowshed, the riverbank and the field. The human makes a fleeting appearance, but giving way to an earthworm, a cat and a cow; a seed and a blade of grass; the water, snow and earth in their different forms. As the film’s motto, director Phie Ambo quotes a thought by Lucretius: "Nothing is created from nothing. Peace fills the mind, peace and hope. Nature is beautiful and its rhythm in place. The animals know their job. Planets revolve on their orbits."
