Trading Germans is the story of one of the largest trade of human beings in post WWII Europe: the organized, systematic sale of the whole German population of Romania by, respectively to, the state of West Germany. This film will focus on the individual stories of the people directly affected by this trade. After a continuous presence of 850 years on the territory of Transylvania and of more than 200 years in the Banat region - during which the Germans have faced the natural hardships, epidemics, the Mongol invasions, during which they opposed assimilation attempts from the Hungarians and the Romanians, during which they endured deportations to Baragan region and to the Soviet Union, but they also rooted themselves to these parts and arrived at a relatively comfortable social position - the Germans disappeared from Romania practically overnight. They were bought and sold, as a result of a cleverly arranged, secret deal. What kind of problems does somebody who has been 'sold' in such a way face nowadays? What are the personal, psychological, moral and socio-economic consequences of this transfer of population, more than twenty years from its completion? These are some of the questions the film Trading Germans aims to answer from the point of view of those directly affected. (HBO Europe)
