French archaeologist and prehistorian Marc Azéma spent more than 20 years examining prehistoric paintings to add an unexpected chapter to the history of cinema... from the Palaeolithic! Based on revolutionary hypotheses and research, he concluded that primitive artists depicted a series of events by overlapping or juxtapositioning images to display movement. Thanks to these two methods, prehistoric people seem to have discovered one of the basic properties of visual perception, i.e. visual reverberation, long before the inventors of optical toys and cameras in the 19th century.
