Inspired by the works of Edogawa Rampo, Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace tells a macabre detective story rife with symbolism and visual tricks that exist somewhere in the delicate balance between gruesome and gorgeous. Middle school life was dull for the intelligent and charismatic Kobayashi, until the day he was framed for his homeroom teacher's murder. After the event drew the media's attention, an infamous high school detective inserted himself into the investigation. Brooding and brilliant, Akechi quickly cleared Kobayashi's name and took the inquisitive young student on as his assistant. But for every case they closed, two more seemed to open in its place. The streets were alive with whispers of one deadly name, Twenty Faces--a legendary murderer who killed criminals in the name of justice. With cryptic clues leading the way, Kobayashi and Akechi began following the trail of bodies left by the prolific killer. But will they be able to stop him before countless innocent people, inspired by his deranged cause, start following his lead? (Madman Entertainment)

angol Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace is a very strange and slightly twisted affair, which gradually turns into a philosophical crime drama show. If the anime’s creators wanted to shock me right from the start, they succeeded quite well in my case; I just do not know if the shock is pleasant. The further development was quite interesting in places, even though I somehow wonder whether I fully absorbed being a high school graduate or whether it is really so unpolished in places. On a positive note, the anime series made me want to find out who Pierre-Simon Laplace was. I guess I missed him in philosophy class (or maybe I missed a few philosophy classes). I got to know his opinions (and I have to say that they could be considered quite interesting, although I do not believe in them too much because I know how chance works or rather does not work). Plus, perhaps I learned something like his contradiction with Schrödinger, who has been mentioned quite often in the anime series and elsewhere lately. So I am going to award one point because this show taught me some new stuff. As far as the main protagonists are concerned, I like genius detectives a lot, although Kobayashi looks like a girl, and it seems like he is ready for a shrink. Akechi is kind of the bored intellectual who did not quite hit the mark for me, and I just could not buy his amazing intelligence either. It is just that L (Death Note) is still unsurpassed. In summary, this show is interesting in its own way; even though the execution could have been much better, the soundtrack is barely noticeable, and the animation is insanely colorful in places and grey in others, which is probably done so on purpose (probably for contrast), even though I was not that enthusiastic about it. So my final impression is average (or slightly below-average), although that might be because I did not get everything right. 4.5/10. ()
