The year is 1829. Nikolay Gogol, a young Third Section clerk, is desperate: his own books seem shallow and mediocre, so he keeps buying entire print runs just to burn them all. He is suffering from violent epileptic seizures and struggles to keep on working. Investigator Yakov Guro accidentally witnesses one such fit and realizes that Gogol's visions contain clues that could help solve actual crimes. Together, Gogol and Guro take on a particularly weird and baffling case that brings them to a small village of Dikanka, where everyone has a huge secret to hide. (Serial Killer)

Russian filmmakers have been surprising me lately. The movie strongly reminded me of Sleepy Hollow in terms of style and atmosphere, so it’s obvious where they drew inspiration from. However, that doesn't change the fact that it’s an excellent mysterious movie with horror elements. Boredom was out of the question, I was thoroughly entertained. It just seemed at one point that Russian plastic surgery during the times of Gogol and Pushkin achieved surprisingly good results. Oh well, let’s not dwell on the details. What I would like to highlight is Oleg Menchikov’s superb performance. He was truly excellent, but I might be biased because I’m a huge fan of his.
