A tízrészes sorozat Dan Simmons igaz történeten alapuló regényéből készült. (AMC Hungary)

angol I don’t know the book it’s based on, but from on the synopsis and the name, I was expecting more straightforward horror with loads of Lovecraftian creatures the explorers would have to face. But in the end, it’s an oppressive descent into the dark corners of the human soul, spiced with hopelessness and Inuit mythology. The monster isn’t Lovecraftian, after all, and, to be honest, it probably would have been better without it – that CGI bear wasn’t very scary. The texture was also disappointing, the story doesn’t very feel very much like it’s taking place in the polar circle – the characters didn’t look frozen enough. But despite of these quibbles, I’m glad that a series like this was produced. The four-star quality is surprisingly consistent from beginning to end, without major fluctuations. Two weekend evenings pleasantly unpleasantly spent. ()

angol The fate of the tragic Franklin expedition soon became the subject of countless speculations, rumors, and legends after the ships' disappearance. Despite the mapping of the expedition's movements and the accumulation of evidence about its fate, there are still many mysteries and ample space for the imaginations of those who attempt to meaningfully explain the end of both ships' crews. It is surprising that no one had dealt with such an attractive theme earlier, but on the other hand, it is logical why a series format prevailed over a feature film considering the duration and size of the expedition. The concept and trailers had to necessarily evoke a strong horror-action spectacle for a significant portion of the fans, but the creators went a different way. The Terror is neither a realistic spectacle nor a pure horror. It is dominated by a mysterious narrative form. I understand the disappointment of some viewers when they saw what was essentially an intimate drama with a slight supernatural motif. Personally, I would prefer it if the mysterious aspect of the story didn't occur at all, especially not the part where they show me the ghost in all its glory. It works best with just the sensed danger somewhere in a snowstorm, vague shadows, and sounds of something large in the distance that can also be interpreted as movements of ice and glaciers. Simply put, it oscillates on the edge of hallucination and imagery triggered by superstition and fear of the inhospitable landscape. The supernatural motif actually functions as a crutch here because, in reality, it progressed much more slowly, with deaths occurring one by one due to exhaustion, despair, and hunger. The series has a decent and functional cast, although the financial limitations and therefore the studio sets are occasionally visible, but that didn't bother me. I enjoyed The Terror, I just don't really understand the concept of having a second season. I can't even imagine where the narrative should go next and, above all, with whom. Overall impression: 80%. angol Despite the favorable rating, I can’t say I liked it. The biggest disappointment of the first season was its departure from the great novel on which it was based. I didn’t like the second season simply because the intended mixture of drama and horror didn’t work out very well. Well, seeing it once was enough for me. I recommend reading “The Terror” by Dan Simmons instead. ()
