Contemporary Chinese festival cinema in a nutshell or the lure of criticism and reflection of conditions, while also careful not to stray too far out of bounds. The absurdism has no bite here, but rather a relieving effect of escapism, while the reality of the urban carcass of a post-industrial small town is merely the austere, insubstantial backdrop of light morality, or rather a promise thereof.
