Oscar and Emmy-winning director Kirk Simon brings us this fascinating documentary to honor the centennial of its namesake prize. Here's the story of how the prestigious Pulitzer got its start, from its conception by the eponymous newspaperman as a means to correct his reputation for yellow journalism to its evolution as a barometer of society. Here, too, is a troupe of actors, including Natalie Portman, John Lithgow, Helen Mirren and Liev Schreiber, reading excerpts from the works of Pulitzer-winning writers like Toni Morrison, Junot Diaz and Michael Chabon. Interviews with authors, journalists, playwrights, musicians and photographers take us still further on a journey among the milestone events and works of art that have shaped our culture over the past century.
