A Freeling család tipikus amerikai középosztálybeli família. Egyik éjjel legkisebb gyermeküket, a tízéves Carol Anne-t megszólítja a tévé belsejéből jövő hang. A házat hamarosan megszállják a készüléken át érkező szellemek. A kezdeti játékos megnyilvánulásuk egyre durvább formát ölt: repkedni kezdenek a tárgyak, forgószél tört ki a lakásban, végül a kis Carol Anne-t elnyeli a szellemvilág.
