A korona (2016)

angol A piece of extremely well done work. For the creators, The Crown must have meant years of intense thinking and shaping of the overall concept, and getting it right on all sides and angles was certainly an exceedingly difficult task, which was accomplished to perfection. The mix of pop watchability, historical accuracy, richness of thought and at the same time absolute detachment of opinion is impressive and perfectly thought out. The pinnacle of Netflix's output. Claire Foy is the best. ()

Season 1 (2016) (S01)

angol The Crown has almost everything (so far). Script-wise, it's quite digestible, even for typical Netflix viewers who devour all sorts of TV shows on desert islands with a pure 0-value. At the same time, it is artistically ambitious, period-accurate, brilliantly shot, and appropriately dynamic and emotional. Even though it’s almost purely conversational, you usually won’t get that impression on screen. Last but not least, it provides countless interesting conversations about important questions and diverse philosophies and perspectives on a range of issues, some of which are still applicable today, because there are life values and decisions that haven’t changed for hundreds if not thousands of years, like the monarchy. The first season sets a high standard, it’ll be fun to watch the following ones. ()

Wolferton Splash (2016) (S01E01)

angol A superbly filmed introduction to a universally acclaimed and highly regarded series. Lavish sets and costumes, a quality cast and a meaningful plot, plus an emotional tug at the viewer. So far, a very good mix of depictions of traditional English gentility, whose decadence and grittiness is wrapped in a great craft of modern filmmaking that even fans of Netflix pop can handle. ()

Hyde Park Corner (2016) (S01E02)

angol A very balanced episode all round, just like the first one. It also outlines a trip abroad, which shows, in addition to the beautiful nature of Africa, the breadth that the series is likely to cover thematically. ()

Windsor (2016) (S01E03)

angol Another very well portrayed behind the scenes of the royal family and this time the high level politics that go on around it. There aren’t any big events, but there’s still something going on. ()

Isten akaratából (2016) (S01E04)

angol A brilliant re-creation of one of London's historic judgement days. A dramatic episode that does not lack some rather significant losses from the ranks of the supporting characters. ()

Füst és tükrök (2016) (S01E05)

angol The crowning, appropriately pompous, lavish and elaborate. At the same time, however, the creators gave us a glimpse behind the scenes of the preparations for the "sacred" ceremony and, of course, the issues associated with it, not only logistical, but also in terms of opinion and philosophy. The Crown has a broader scope than it might initially appear. ()

Puskaporos hordó (2016) (S01E06)

angol A sincere relationship in an insincere situation. And when good old journalists are added to the mix, the drama is taken care of. A very cleverly filmed episode about a couple who were not allowed to live together for political reasons. ()

Scientia Potentia Est (2016) (S01E07)

angol The behind-the-scenes struggles, the traditional elements of the British monarchy, and to top it all off, the character of the Queen, whose development is portrayed in a great way. Classy, decadent, but at the same time not losing the natural point of view of a person who is becoming aware of their strengths and weaknesses. The final crescendo is just the icing on the cake. ()

Büszkeség és öröm (2016) (S01E08)

angol A lavish visit to the Commonwealth and excellently filmed and acted feuds within the royal family, specifically the two powerful sisters – each so exceptional and yet completely different. The acting is precise, the direction tightly gripped. ()

Orgyilkosok (2016) (S01E09)

angol A sensitive farewell to a political icon and world legend. There have been several Churchills on screen, but I dare say it was only John Lithgow who really played him to perfection. The painting scenes, when two completely different personalities in the form of an ageing statesman and a brooding yet sensitive painter talk to each other, are one of the highlights of the whole series. ()

Gloriana (2016) (S01E10)

angol In the last episode, The Crown remained pleasantly down-to-earth and gripped by an emotional tragedy within the family circle. It is extremely interesting to watch two sisters, both so exceptionally talented, but each doing something completely different. Diligence, discipline and machine-like precision vs boldness, spark and pure emotion. ()

Season 2 (2017) (S02)

angol The second season confirms the fact that the success of the first was not an accident. It masterfully continues the polished combination of historical accuracy, period flamboyance and a little healthy improvisation here and there. This unique concoction for success is complemented once again by fabulous actors in practically all leading and supporting roles. At the same time, the creators managed not to miss the mark in their attempt to make the second season bigger, grander, or perhaps more mainstream. The recipe from the first episode works with very similar ingredients, it operates with what tastes good and tries to eliminate as much as possible what doesn't taste good and it succeeds almost completely. ()

Szerencsétlenség (2017) (S02E01)

angol The second season opens without hesitation, with the creators following exactly the same style as in the first one. It remains relatively faithful in terms of history, with an accurately captured atmosphere and precise performances. Plus peppered with the Suez conflict and, surprisingly for an otherwise sedentary dialogue series, quite an action-packed finale. ()

Férfiak társasága (2017) (S02E02)

angol An exceptional episode, the only one so far to show a person other than Elizabeth in the lead role. A tribute to Philip that gives him the opportunity to excel exactly as he needs to. A man who was in a very difficult situation and handled it with true aplomb. A man of many talents who dedicated his life to a "higher principle". From the perspective of the male ego, this could almost be a heroic feat. Deservedly, he is the one who takes this episode all to himself. ()

Lisszabon (2017) (S02E03)

angol Although there are some minor or major digressions in the story of this episode (the divorce scandal of the supporting characters, the distrust of the government), the character of Phillip and his importance to the Queen and the royal family is again the main focus. Once again, the creators portray him brilliantly, without unnecessary moralising and pathos, in short, a man who sometimes makes mistakes, but at the same time abounds in high qualities. ()

Beryl (2017) (S02E04)

angol A one woman show by Vanessa Kirby and her wild collages of emotions that come to the surface. Matthew Goode is an interesting supporting character, he plays in a kind of veiled "Watchmen" way, the way we like it. ()

Marionettek (2017) (S02E05)

angol Entertaining, suspenseful, inspiring and healthily critical. Such is this episode, which brilliantly reflects the open scissors between monarchy and democracy. Between traditions that have lasted hundreds if not thousands of years versus modern, dynamic and forward-thinking times. ()

Vergangenheit (2017) (S02E06)

angol In terms of the political reconstruction of a significant event, it’s brilliantly shot; moderate, with an emphasis on factual accuracy. Filmmaking-wise, it loses a bit of the dynamism and entertainment effect, but it still manages to combine both of these key elements more than capably. Another top quality episode. ()

Matrimonium (2017) (S02E07)

angol Crucial events surrounding Margaret. The anabasis of her complex relationships, unfulfilled love and the limits of the aristocratic world to which she is unwillingly chained. With all the advantages that she abundantly and happily enjoys using and the disadvantages that she despises and tries to run away from. Once again, the riveting Vanessa Kirby and the equally intriguing Matthew Goode, who si great at those mysterious gentlemen and mesmerizingly interesting personalities, just think of Watchmen. A piece that gathers more emotion and tension in its hour-long running time than any average second-rate feature film. Still first-class entertainment, this time with a complete absence of pure politics. ()
