Democracia em preto e branco

In the 1980s, people wore sweaters and shoulder pads and listened to music on Walkmans. Some even dared to dream about video phone calls and world peace. The documentary film Black and White Democracy shows how Brazil suffered simultaneously from a poor economy, lack of democracy and fear instilled by the military junta. Even if the state is ruled with austerity and fear, the people can enforce equality with football and rock music. Football is a way to compensate for illiteracy and political unawareness, to learn about cooperation, and to change society one pawn at a time. The Brazilian democratic movement was even named after a football team, the Corinthians Democracy. When the film asks why anyone would bother to fight for democracy and the importance of voting, the answers echo deep humanity.
