Az első világháború utolsó évében Ulrichot, a kimerült német katonaorvost kiküldik, hogy ellenőrizze egy távoli elmegyógyintézetben lábadozó sokkos betegeket valahol Lettországban. A különös világban, amelyet felfedez, próbára teszi higgadt gondolkodását. A felesleges erőfeszítések, egy titokzatos, vad fiúval találkozás arra sarkallja Ulrichot, hogy szembenézzen igazi önmagával. Hamarosan kiderül, hogy a végsőkig ki kell tartania a háború közeledő őrületével szemben. (Cinemax)

I’d really been looking forward to this Latvian flick, which Cinemax decided to offer to its viewers and I was pretty disappointed to realize at the end of the movie that the handling of this interesting premise wasn’t really for my eyes. You see the director decided to approach this interesting premise by for instance not moving the camera for five minutes even though a lot happens in those five minutes… somewhere in the distance. On top of that, you get 100% depression that can be felt from every single tree drown in the marsh. And you don’t get any kind words, or any words at all for that matter. So, it’s clear that emotions will be pretty hard to find for the viewer. But on the other hand, I have to say that although this film is incredibly demanding and it makes nothing easier for the viewer, it still has some great cinematography, which - intentionally - tells more by looking at a rotten tree than any person would in that sanatorium.
