Fassbinder's entry into the world of feature films foreshadows the rest of his work with its originality and daring unconventional approach. A comparison with Godard is appropriate in many ways. In Fassbinder's debut, one cannot deduce what is happening in the inner world of the main trio of characters from their fossilized faces, not even the best psychoanalyst. Thus, all that remains is to observe the long shots of the camera, the play of contrasts between black and white, and the gangster story "about friendship, love, and betrayal".
