Coming Out Under Fire

The American army hates homosexuals. Last year, this was once again confirmed when president Clinton made an attempt to end the discrimination for reasons of sexual inclination within the army. The military lobby successfully mobilised both the political and public opinion: Clinton had to agree with a compromise that didn't change anything. The military's homophobia did not appear out of the blue. As far back as World War II, homosexuality has been inconceivable within the corps. Whoever was honest about it was designated as 'insane' or 'a sex pervert', and sent home as 'unwanted'. Systematic persecution intended to purge the military of homosexual personnel. Nine veterans, men and women, recount their experiences: concealed solidarity and a lot of fun, but also fear to be exposed and betrayed by companions. The interviews have been supplemented with rare archive footage of medical examinations, psychiatric sessions and educational lectures on sexuality. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
