Jacques Demy’s crystalline debut gave birth to the fictional universe in which so many of his characters would live, play, and love. It’s among his most profoundly felt films, a tale of crisscrossing lives in Nantes (Demy’s hometown) that floats on waves of longing and desire. Heading the film’s ensemble is the enchanting Anouk Aimée as the title character, a cabaret chanteuse who’s awaiting the return of a long-lost lover and unwilling to entertain the adoration of another love-struck soul, the wanderer Roland (Marc Michel). Humane, wistful, and witty, Lola is a testament to the resilience of the heartbroken. (Criterion)

angol This is a distinctly melodramatic example of French New Wave cinema, chock-a-block with characters whose emotional impulsiveness are absolutely not credible in the least, or at least their behavior disgusts you. The magically beautiful Anouk Aimée has a role here that for me was more disagreeable than likable, as it perhaps should have been. I appreciate the final point about the vicious circle, but otherwise, Lola left me completely indifferent for most of the time. [LFŠ 2019] ()

angol It's a pretty nice romance, but it still seemed a bit ordinary and somewhat senseless to me, to be included among the 1001 best movies you should see before you die. It's not bad, definitely not, but for me, it's not a work that I would consider truly exceptional. But it can certainly be enjoyed. ()
