Water and muddy sediments are without doubt two of the Earth's most conducive environments for the development of new life forms. All life forms have evolved directly from the kinds of microorganisms found here. These very special ecosystems are like a complex and interdependent puzzle; each piece has its own place and role to fill in the survival of the entire ecosystem.
There is a very special region of the Earth where this entire ecosystem is on display in all its richness: the coastline of Guyana. Here, the muddy wetlands and estuaries represent a fascinating interface between the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the South American continent. It is home to an incredibly diverse array of life forms and is one of the last sanctuaries for species such as black caimans and a number of rare and spectacularly colorful birdlife.
This extraordinary documentary takes us on a voyage by boat along the Kaw River, on foot through the muddy flats of its estuary, and by helicopter above the swamp, almost touching the canopy and its nesting birds. A team of scientific researchers explores the incredible diversity of life in this fascinating environment.
