Vaszary Gábor regénye, a Monpti, világsiker volt, az 1930–40-es években sokak olvasták, több nyelvre is lefordították az ábrándos lelkületű világfi történetét. A 30-as évek Párizsának hangulatát tükröző, könnyed regény – a cím a francia mon petit, vagyis kicsikém rövidítése – olyan, mintha egy mai francia film lenne. Élcelődésekkel és elmés párbeszédekkel teli, lüktető, eleven jelenetek sora. Az 50-es években, amikor megfilmesítették Németországban, a háború előtti francia életforma és életmód valami olyasmit jelentett, mint Krúdy regényeiben a századelő.
