In 1998 Marco Pantani, the most flamboyant and popular cyclist of his era, won both the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia - a titanic feat of physical and mental endurance that no rider has repeated since. He was a hero to millions - the saviour of cycling following the doping scandals which threatened to destroy the sport. However, less than six years later, aged just 34, he died alone, in a cheap Italian hotel room. Pantani: The Accidental Death of a Cyclist explores the startling truth behind one man's remarkable descent from being amongst the finest athletes on earth to his tragic end in a sport riven by intrigue. angol A really interesting documentary. It makes you think about whether Pantani was unstable and just couldn’t accept the fact that he was taking drugs and so with all the sorrow in his heart, he overdosed; or whether he couldn’t accept the fact that the corrupted Cycling Federation set him up because he was absolutely unmatched back then. Considering that almost every sports federation in our corrupted little world has always been tangled up in something, and considering the passion for sport in Marco’s eyes, I’m personally leaning towards Macro Pantani being innocent and his whole death being the result of someone’s lie taking apart everything he used to believe in. By the way, it was really lame to see Maradona talk about how everyone who gave up on Marco was responsible for his death; especially himself, who was taking all kinds of drugs back then. Anyway, that doesn’t change the fact that I still don’t get why the Cycling Federation took all of Lance Armstrong’s Tour de France titles after they found out he’d been taking drugs, but Macro is the only person to this day to win both Tour De France and Giro d'Italia within a single year… Could it be someone’s redemption?
