Nathgari egy a metropoliszok zajától távoli ausztrál sivatagi kisváros. Ide költözik Catherine és Metthew Parker, akik az egyik nap riadtan veszik észre, hogy gyermekeik, Tommy és Lily egy pusztító homokvihar előtt rejtélyes körülmények között eltűntek. A helységet sötétség és homok lepi el, azonban a városiak önzetlenül sietnek a pár segítségére. A nyomozást a helyi rendőr, David Rae vezeti. Hamarosan egyre nyilvánvalóbbá válik, hogy valami szörnyűség történt a két gyerekkel. A közvélemény a pletykák hatására Parkerék ellen fordult.
