A personal betrayal causes Josef Omgang to leave a seemingly successful life as a young attorney in Oslo. Drifting between dream and reality, he returns to his childhood home of Korshavn, a fishing village he has not seen for years. Through meetings with his mother, Tatjana, of whom he only has vague recollections, her modern counterpart Doris, and Anna the messenger, his journey also becomes a journey into his own frozen and crippled inner self. Once home, he meets a village in financial ruin, which corresponds to his own and his family's inner crisis. Reluctantly, and driven by impulses he hardly understands himself, he is forced into a seemingly ambiguous conflict until he is confronted with a final choice: Only if the past represented by his father is destroyed, can a new age begin, both for his home village and for himself.
