Croodéknak kijutott a veszélyekből és a katasztrófákból, az agyaras ősállatoktól a világvége túléléséig, de most az eddigi legnagyobb kihívással kell szembenézniük: egy másik családdal. Croodéknak szükségük van egy új élőhelyre, így aztán az első őscsalád a nyakába veszi a világot, hogy biztonságosabb otthont keressenek. Kisvártatva rábukkannak egy falakkal körülvett édenkertre, amely minden igényüknek megfelel… egy valamit kivéve. Már lakik ott egy másik család: a Jobbagyék. Jobbagyék (hangsúly a „jobb”-on) a míves lombkunyhójukkal, elképesztő találmányaikkal és több hektárnyi frissen öntözött terményeikkel jó pár fokkal Croodék fölött állnak az evolúciós lépcsőn. Amikor befogadják Croodékat - a világ első vendégeit - nem kell sok hozzá, hogy feszültség támadjon az őscsalád és a modern család között. Amikor már minden veszni látszik, egy új veszély mindkét családot nagyszabású kalandba taszítja a falakon kívül, és félre kell tenniük ellentéteiket, erőt kell meríteniük egymásból, és együtt kell megteremteniük a jövőjüket.
