One night, the drifter Vojta discovers an underground treasure guarded by a mysterious spirit. He flees, but he manages to stuff a few gold coins and a small tinderbox into his pocket. He loses this money in a pub, but there he learns of a beautiful princess who never leaves the castle. When he eventually uses the tinderbox, he inadvertently summons the spirit, who must now serve him. At Vojta's command, the ghost brings the sleeping princess to him in the night and Vojta immediately falls in love. He can think of nothing other than the princess. The ghost is eager to help as he's grown fond of Vojta; being with him shows him how he had wasted his former life. But when a greedy court lady discovers the secret of the tinderbox and steals it. Now Vojta finds himself in danger, from which only the princess can help. (Zlín Film Festival)

angol Neither Veronika Kubařová's beautiful princess nor the traditionally great Viktor Preiss, who could have played Baron Prášil on the spot, were able to save this new Czech Christmas fairy tale. There’s a stupid script, most of the characters stupid, the main character acts like a soulless dummy, the other acting performances are poor (an unbearable Jan Hrušínský, a very similarly "sympathetic" Jiřina Bohdalová), no humor to be found... That was a long ninety minutes. ()
