In the slums of Nairobi even grandmothers must know self-defense. Kung Fu Grandma dives into the everyday life of a slum called Korogocho, at times with gritty realism. However, the gloomy mood is balanced by the energetic grandmas beating a leather punching bag. Their fearless attitude gives hope for improvement. The film follows elderly women's self-defense practice sessions and ponders why young men rape women as old as their grandmothers. Among other things, superstitions are at work in the background. Despite the carefully restricted point of view, Kung Fu Grandma is not only a story about the grandmothers of one slum. It also deals with global problems such as the spread of drug abuse and the HIV epidemic.
