What could a New Zealand vanguard saxophonist of Scottish descent hope to find behind a milk churn in the East German boondocks? Musical extravagance! And "Heimat" (homeland). The charismatic musician offers us a fresh look at Germany: zappy, colorful and emotional – full of life and full of music.
In search of German folk music, Hayden makes many bizarre acquaintances, cheerfully drinking toasts with the whole musician group of regulars and joining in many a polka with his saxophone. The wide variety of German folk music is portrayed here in its full splendor, revealing undreamt-of stimuli, the authentic charm of which we as surprised observers cannot resist. Hayden introduces "their" folk music to the Germans: Music that they would rather expose to the ridicule of superficial prejudice than to hear it with open ears which would give them a chance to understand what it can tell them about themselves and their "Heimat".
For Sound of Heimat - Germany sings, Hayden Chisholm embarks on an expedition all across Germany, during which he meets old and young, traditional and modern folk musicians. He not only encounters all possible kinds of regional musical specialties but also, time and time again, the widespread German ambivalence when it comes to "Heimat" and folk music. At the end, Hayden finds something Germans are still looking for, in part: Exoticism behind the next milk churn, beautiful melodies and touching lyrics. – In short: a piece of "Heimat" in the melodies and lyrics of Germanys songs and dances.
