Európai vakációjuk során Athénba érkezik a karizmatikus Chester (Viggo Mortensen) és vonzó felesége, Colette (Kirsten Dunst) 1962 nyarán, ahol találkoznak egy görögül beszélő amerikaival. Rydal (Oscar Isaac), aki idegenvezetőként dolgozik és nem utolsó sorban turista hölgyek társaságát keresi, elfogadja az elbűvölő asszony vacsora meghívását, hogy a jómódú pár közelébe kerülhessen. Amikor a hotelbe érkezik a pillanat hevében Chester ráveszi, hogy segítsen eltüntetni egy eszméletlen férfi testét, aki állítólag megtámadta őt. Hármójuk sorsa ettől kezdve menthetetlenül összefonódik. Chester sötét titkai és a kialakuló szerelmi háromszög egy országokon átívelő háborút indít el a két férfi között. (JIL)

At first I gave it four stars because I loved the retro atmosphere of sunny Greece, but the blandness of the film manifested itself after a couple of days and I remember almost nothing about it, with the exception of those beautiful Greek locations, of course.

I was very doubtful that I could appreciate a film based on Patricia Highsmith’s book set in Greece in 1962. My previous experience with films like Purple Noon or Ghost of Love with Alain and Romy was not very good. I had no desire to read those books, preferably in the original languages. But all my life I have had a fondness for the face of Kirsten Dunst, who seems to be only at the beginning of her career. Even though she's already given us so much joy. The beautiful, sultry atmosphere of sunny Greece seemed to inspire us only to watch an unclassifiable married couple from the so-called better society lazily strolling around the sights. She's very glamorous in unbecoming costumes, while he's worked very hard just to cover her with luxury, when suddenly they meet a little con man... The performances are superb, the atmosphere matches the lazy sunny day and the sights are of course beautiful. I'm glad I gave The Two Faces of January a chance.
