My Beautiful Country paves its path in a pretty brutal manner. Actually, I felt pretty bad already in the opening scene that introduces the Ibar River and the relationships between the Serbians and Albanians. In general, the Balkans have been blessed with a multi-religious culture. You can’t take that away from them. Only I would love to see what things are really like today, since I keep running into more and more anti-war movies that intentionally point out the very absurdity of the conflict, which reaches as far back as the years after WW2. I felt really sad after I saw this movie. It really reminded me of No Man’s Land, which on top of everything ends on a very depressing note. You will have to wait to see the ending of this movie for yourselves, I don’t want to spoil the movie for you. Anyways, I tip my hat off to the author, who not only lived through this pile of human atrocities, but who also managed to make such a good movie about it. Whatever wars might be like, the essence of all religious conflicts of modern times begins in the Balkans. Where else can good friends shoot each other only because of religion… (2015.11.22)
