Bernard Stiegler, Jean-Luc Nancy and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe let themselves be loosely inspired by Heidegger's notes on man's relationship to technology as elaborated in a lecture on Hölderlin's hymn The Ister. Their reflections are intercut with industrial still-lifes and traces of wartime history along the banks of the Danube on an upstream journey towards both the source of the river and the source of Heidegger's tender recitation of Hölderlin's ode.
