Brittles kapitány egy indiánok által rendezett tömegmészárlás alig néhány túlélőjének egyike. Amikor 1878-ban hír érkezik újabb indián zavargásokról, a nyugdíjazás előtt álló Brittles újra kivonul lovasságával, de ezúttal egy újabb vérfürdő megakadályozására. It is interesting that John Wayne is once again playing a character who is older than his actual age. He mastered the role of Captain Nathan Brittles, who is preparing for retirement, but the actor was only forty-two at the time. However, he played a role that suited him the most. He is a just man, strict and unafraid to raise his voice to his subordinates, but he will never do something he should be ashamed of for the rest of his life or something that would require him to make amends. He always strives to be an honest man and despises those who hide behind something and are not honorable. This is Duke, as fans love him even after many years.
