In this documentary, the American writer Alice Walker searches for the cultural and historical roots of female circumcision. Women from the Senegalese Commission for Abolition of sexual Mutilation, postulate that female genital mutilation is a way to keep women under control. They ask the United Nations for protection. Aminita Diop, a Malian, who fled to France to avoid circumcision, points out that nowhere in the Koran is the necessity of female circumcision mentioned. Women "circumcisers" refuse to disclose their secrets, and maintain that circumcision is an important tradition. A Nigerian woman argues with them: "It`s nothing cultural, it is torture". A thoughtful treatment of a highly charged modern dilemma. (One World)
