1878. szeptember. A cheyenne indiánok nyomorúságos körülmények között élnek a kormány által kijelölt kietlen, sivatagi rezervátumban: soraikat malária és éhség tizedeli. A kormány képviselői - ígéretük ellenére nem keresik fel őket, hogy meghallgassák panaszaikat. A végsőkig elkeseredett indiánok elhatározzák hát, hogy visszatérnek szülőföldjükre, ahol egykoron boldogan éltek. A rezervátumot azonban a törvény szerint tilos elhagyniuk. A fehérek közül az egyetlen, aki együtt érez velük, Deborah, az indián gyerekek tanítónője. Sorsukban osztozva velük megy, annak ellenére, hogy tudja, a helyőrség rövidesen üldözőbe veszi őket...
