Megtörtént gyilkosságsorozaton alapul a film története. De Salvo 1962 és 1964 között 13 nőt fojtott meg. Fleischer dokumentatív pontosságra és tárgyszerűségre törekszik. A filmet magyarországi bemutatójakor az egyik kritikus így méltatta: „Fleischer ügyesen bontja a formát, a széles vásznat – merész, de indokolt trükkel – valósággal miszlikre szabdalja, hogy a bűn riasztó mechanizmusát feltárhassa…” (Örökmozgó)

That ending! Brr. A great film with terrific ideas (the split screen, for example), Tony Curtis who can inspire fear as well as pity, the always good Henry Fonda and the beautifully "goofy" Jiří Voskovec in one of the supporting roles. Richard Fleischer created a hellishly evocative and almost documentary crime drama that doesn't rely on action scenes, but rather solely on suspense. A great inspiration for Fincher's Zodiac, I'd say. Chilling.

The true story of the Boston Strangler, brilliantly portrayed by Tony Curtis. In the 1960s it was fashionable to divide the screen into several parts with a parallel flowing plot (for example Airport) and here we enjoy it to the fullest. It's not a bad thing at all, on the contrary, it gives the film a fresh edge. Seeing, for example, a potential victim in one part of the screen and the killer standing behind the door in the other part is interesting. It’s hard to describe, you must see it. Fans of Jiří Voskovec will also be delighted by his sensibility.
