It seems that the trademark of Indonesian director and screenwriter Joko Anwar will be utterly messy and crowded stories. The Forbidden Door has an even more confusing structure than Ritual, which is something to say. Ritual makes sense at least in its own universe (the problems begin when we wonder whether something like that can happen also in the real world), but many things in The Forbidden Door don’t make any sense at all. Anwar relies on a self-serving twist that excuses everything, but it’s unfair and prevents me from feeling enthusiastic, yet even then, I have to rate it better than Ritual. For most of its run, the film holds a very decent atmosphere that is tense and arouses your interest about what will happen next. But the lack of a meaningful outcome is still a shame.
