In the beginning of the 1950s when our story takes place, I was living a happy childhood in an uhappy world. Today I am not sure what part of my memories of that dark after-war times I have lived, heard, read somewhere, or collected from various sources. What I do know for sure is that the lives of adults around me at that time were much more full and diverse compared to the simplified and interpreted black-and-white picture painted by the history or media. Same as today, everyone was the master of their own fate – the author of both the lighter and darker corners of their conscience, full of love, disappointment, happiness, suffering, kindness, cruelty, nobility, falseness, heroism, perfidy... Our conscience is the only thing that stays with us during our whole life, whether we want it or not. I believe that through our rich, almost epic story we can offer the attentive viewer something they can relate to from their own lives, as well as a deep emotional experience. angol If it weren’t for some of the actors I would probably have dozed off after a couple of minutes of this movie. And that’s despite the fact that the premise seems quite interesting. What’s worse is the execution, which is incredibly boring, sterile and uninteresting. But I do have to tip my hat off to the fact that the Slovaks didn’t spare their own nation at all. I don’t think the Czechs are ever this strict with themselves. I’d been looking forward to the post-war atmosphere of a tumultuous country, but I didn’t get that. Still, I appreciate the effort. ()

angol It’s got a good theme, but I can't help feeling that I just didn't believe in the characters' destinies. The cuts between the present and the past seemed kind of boring to me, and it would almost have been better if the film had just focused on the past. The aftermath itself isn't particularly interesting. It's like the film wanted to say a lot, but said almost nothing. ()
