Errol Flynn stars as Gunnar Brogge, the leader of the resistance. Learning of the possibility of getting arms from England to fight the Nazis, he's persuaded to remain in the village rather than leave, as he had planned. He calls a clandestine meeting of the townspeople in the church, to decide whether they want to try to acquire weapons from England and fight or allow the continued Nazi presence. The pacifist Pastor Torgerson (Richard Fraser) counsels acceptance of their current lot. The respected village doctor, Martin Stensgard (Walter Huston), asks for caution. But ultimately, the people agree to order the guns. After having seized a great deal of property, the Nazis confiscate the town's fishing fleet, its prime means of survival. Then, Karen Stensgard (Anne Sheridan), daughter of Martin and Brogge's lover, is raped. Martin kills the rapist and is captured and sentenced to death along with seven other resistance leaders.
